[run]

I am extremely hesitant to share what I’m about to write because the conclusion to this story has yet to be written and is somewhat uncertain.  I’d much rather share after I know I’ve been successful!  But, this is already a beautiful story of how God is constantly shaping my life, of how he loves me enough to force me out of my comfort zone and how he uses situations in our past to bring us to perfect redemption.  It’s a story too beautiful not to share.

Now that I’ve hopefully captured you attention… [drumroll please!]

I’ve decided to give running a try (again!).

My story with running starts back when I was in high school.  I had a friend who was a runner who convinced me that I should join the cross country team with her because they were short of members.  Why I agreed I have no idea, but the first meet came shortly thereafter – before I had much time to train.  The meet consisted of two races – one for the ladies and then a guy’s race that followed.  I lined up with my fellow competitors and set off for what would become one of the most grueling experiences.  It did not take me long to realize that I was not prepared and as the race went on, I fell further and further behind to the point where most of the girls had finished, the guy’s race had begun and I was not sure I was even going to be able to finish.

At some point in the race, I must’ve run past where my parents were watching because before I knew it, my Dad was running alongside me – in his dress shoes, no less! – helping me get to the finish line.  I did finish that race – my one and only race as a cross country team member – just slightly before the guys starting coming across the finish line.

I was mortified and for the longest time, if you would’ve asked me what my most embarrassing moment was, I would’ve shared that story.  I was embarrassed that I had done so poorly and that the only way I was able to finish was because my Dad ran with me.

Eventually, though, as the years passed by, I began to realize what a gift my Dad had given me that day and stopped seeing that race as such an embarrassment.

But … I had absolutely no desire to ever run again.

In my mind, I had failed and I was not willing to repeat the experience.

Of course, God had other plans!

This past weekend we had our neighbors over for a family photo session and pizza and as we were sitting around the table following dinner, my neighbor and I started talking about bucket lists – things we’d like to accomplish or try sometime in our life.  One of her things was to run a mini marathon and before I knew it, I was agreeing, saying that I too would love to run some type of race.  I’ve seen and heard about people I know training for and running various races and I’ve always wished I was a better runner.  But I had allowed that experience from high school – always in the back of my mind – to keep me from feeling like it was something that I could actually do.

The very next day after our dinner together, I came across a post written on one of the blogs I follow about a wife and mom close in age to me who had recently decided to train for a 5K.  She described some of her insecurities and fears – all of which I could relate to.  But what really struck a chord with me was how part of the reason she decided to take on the challenge was because she wanted to be an example to her kids.  She talked about her constant attempts to encourage them to try new things and get out of their comfort zones and be brave, yet she wasn’t doing any of those things herself.  She realized that if she wanted her kids to try things that might be difficult or uncomfortable, she had to be willing to put herself out there as well.

I read the post through tears and mutual understanding and then forwarded it on to my neighbor to read.  Her response was immediate – “When do we start training?”  We made plans to begin this week.

This series of events wasn’t enough for God, however.  There was more he wanted to do – this time in my heart and my spiritual journey.

Another day went by along with a follow-up post on the same blog.  This time the woman – who had run the 5K the previous day – was sharing her thoughts as well as the specifics of the race itself.  She shared about how her husband chose to run the race as well, even though he rarely had time to train, disliked running because of an old injury and didn’t even own a good pair of running shoes.  They had decided ahead of time that they would each run their own race because she knew he’d be faster and didn’t want to hold him back.  As the race began, he quickly went out ahead of her, but only ahead by enough so that he was always in her sights.  Throughout the race, she knew that he was setting the pace for her … silently leading her along, willing her not to quit.  When he crossed the finish line, he immediately stopped and looked her direction, waiting for her to finish the race as well.

What I loved about her story was the way she was able to relate that experience with her husband and that race, to the way God runs the race of life with each of his children.  He knows what we need and is willing to be there with us with each step we take!

What God did for me in that moment of reading someone else’s experience, was remind me of that race in high school – the one I thought I had failed at.  In an instant the entire experience was completely reshaped in my memory.  Instead of seeing it as an embarrassment and failure, God showed me that by running alongside me through the remainder of the race, my earthly Dad was being an example of my Heavenly Dad.  Just as my earthly Dad ran beside me to help me in my time of need – without any thought to what he was wearing (dress shoes!) or what any one thought – so my Heavenly Dad gives everything to help me as well.  Both love me and believe in me enough to be right beside me.

And so, given the way God has orchestrated the circumstances of the past few days, I can’t not run.  This is my opportunity not only to show my kids that I have the courage to try something I’m really afraid I’m going to be bad at, but also to remind myself that my God promises to be beside, before and behind me every step of the way.

And I’m happy to report that my neighbor and I set out last night on our very first run/walk.  We walked and ran in short intervals and although the first run was particularly difficult and we were both tired, the second one was easier and we both finished the evening feeling pretty empowered.

And isn’t that the way it is with God as well?  His presence empowers us … to keep pressing on, to do the hard thing when it’s asked of us, to lay aside our pride and try something we might not be good at, to be vulnerable in our relationships with one another, to choose joy when we’d rather curl into the fetal position and feel sorry for ourselves.

One step at a time… stride for stride… my God and I…

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily hinders our progress.  And let us run with endurance the race that God has set before us.  [Hebrews 12:1]

…journey to be continued…

[And no, the picture really has nothing to do with my story, but since this part of my journey begins in the fall, I thought it was appropriate!  Change is in the air!  And what’s a photo blog without a photo?]

[golden]

Yesterday’s post was pretty deep, so today I’m keeping it simple!  Just a little fall brilliance from our camping trip last weekend…

7/52: Pretty Ugly

I’m a little behind … week seven was actually last week.  Oh well!  Sometimes photo challenges make me anxious (which is why I hardly ever follow through with them until the end) … this time I’ve decided to just take it at my own pace.  If I miss a week (or am late), so be it.

I really liked this theme.  There are a lot of “pretty ugly” things in my world right now.  A dead leaf laying on dead grass would typically be considered ugly.  However, you add in some frost and the right amount of morning sunlight and it is transformed into beauty.  I’ve said it before and I’ll [probably] say it again:  photography has transformed the way I see the world.  Everywhere I look, I see beauty in the ordinary.  I will always be grateful for that!

One frosty, foggy morning…

This past Sunday we awoke to the most amazing sight … ice fog that had everything covered in thick, sparkly frost.  I tried to capture the beauty but I don’t think these pictures do that morning justice.
As we drove to church there were actually places where the sun was shining down into the fog that made it look like glitter was floating through the air.  It was stunning!  I even brought my camera in the car hoping to capture the fog and ice in a more open setting than our woods, but didn’t end up finding the right setting.  I’m thankful for these pictures, but even more thankful for the images my mind captured.

Frosty Macro

Earlier in the week we woke up to a crisp, clear, cold morning in which everything was covered in a layer of frost.  It was gorgeous!  So I decided to brave the cold and take a photo walk around my yard to see what I could find.

Typically right now everything in my yard looks dead and ugly.  But, I love the way the delicate frost gives everything new life.  Even a dead, brown leaf looks kind of pretty with a layer of frost covering it.  And bare tree branches sparkle in the morning sun when dressed in little ice crystals.  Winter where I live requires me to search a little harder for beauty.  But it’s there.  All I have to do is see.

Snow Beautiful!

Last week we got our first good snow of the winter – eight inches when it was said and done.  It’s all gone now but I can’t help but look at these pictures and be in awe of how beautiful our woods looked all covered in a fresh blanket of white.  From what I’ve heard, we’re predicted to get a decent amount of snow all winter, which I admit, kind of excites me!  I know it’s early and I’ll feel different in February, but for now all I can say is, “Wow, God!  Thank you for allowing me to enjoy your beautiful creation!”

Pleasing who?

Hi!  My name is Lisa and I’m a people pleaser…

IMG_9609_edited-1

I don’t think being a people pleaser is an all together horrible character trait … unless of course, you find yourself striving a little too hard to win the approval of others … hard enough that you begin to lose yourself.

That is where I found myself recently.

Photography has been such a wonderful hobby for me.  What started out as a love for taking pictures of my kids with my little point and shoot camera, quickly became something that I felt passionate about.  When I “graduated” to my dslr four years ago, I set out to learn as much as I could about that camera.  Eventually my pictures started to improve and I started receiving positive feedback about my work, which felt good.  Very good.

Maybe too good.

You see, somewhere along the line taking pictures became a major part of my identity.  When I took good pictures and got lots of good feedback from other photographers (or anyone for that matter!), I was on cloud nine.  But if I shared a picture and got no (or very little) feedback, I was crushed.  The silence felt like rejection to me and it began to affect how I saw myself and my work.

And so I tried harder.  I subscribed to more photo blogs, participated in more photo challenges, commented on more blogs, and posted more often, here, on my own blog.  And it only helped a little.  For a time, I received a few more comments and for a time I felt a little more confident about my work.  But it wasn’t enough.  Compared to other photo blogs, mine was not even coming close when it came to traffic.  Even after my “improved” efforts, I still wasn’t marketing myself enough to garner the attention I thought I needed to build my confidence.  And that only made me feel worse about myself.

Thankfully about that time, God began a work in my heart.  As is so typical of my Heavenly Father, he graciously and gently invited me to go on a journey with him … a journey towards finding my identity in him ALONE.  One of the ways he did this was by placing devotionals in my path that spoke to this very topic …

“Instead of obsessing about other people’s opinions of you, keep your focus on Me.  Ultimately, it is My view of you that counts.”  (Jesus Calling, 10/28/11)

“To do things no one else is doing, we can’t do what everyone else is doing.  And our greatest triumphs in life are always our most solitary ones.  Every great victory begins on our knees.”  (Ann Voskamp, www.aholyexperience.com)

And my personal favorite, the one that started it all …

“Beware of seeing yourself through other people’s eyes.  There are several dangers to this practice.  First of all, it is nearly impossible to discern what others actually think of you.  Moreover, their views of you are variable; subject to each viewer’s spiritual, emotional, and physical condition.  The major problem with letting others define you is that it borders on idolatry.  Your concern to please others dampens your desire to please Me, your Creator.”  (Jesus Calling, 10/12/11)

That last quote just made sense to me.  Especially the part about how when I become a bit obsessed with what other people think of me or my photographs, I’m actually committing idolatry.  Ouch!  I didn’t even realize how much power I was giving others until those words hit me between the eyes.

And so I started praying that God would allow me the courage to let go of my need for approval, that the lack of comments would not consume me and that I would have the strength and ability to keep my heart and mind focused on Him and His presence and not my circumstances.

As I prayed those words day after day, something miraculous began to happen.  Gradually, the scales on my eyes began to fall off and I stopped feeling the need to strive for attention and positive feedback.  And with that weight lifted off my shoulders, I began to feel free.

I’m under no illusions that this is the end of this struggle for me.  Life is a journey and I’m fully aware that God still a lot of work to do in and through me.  But I’m on my way.  I’m finally letting go of the grip this particular issue had on me.

I may not compare to a lot of the blogging photographers that are out there … I may not receive the most comments … my pictures may not always be tack sharp or have perfect composition … I may never have my own business or be recognized for outstanding work, but …

My name is Lisa and I’m a God-pleaser…

[And that’s good enough!]

A prayer

IMG_9587 with watermark

Oh precious Heavenly Father – the Creator of all things – I praise you for the beautiful colors all around me.  I thank you for filling our world with beauty … I thank you for the changing of the seasons.  May I never wish this season away – pining for what was or yearning for what is to come – but let me be fully present right now, right here.  My life is yours.  I trust you.  I desire that my heart for you would continue to grow.  I don’t merely want to be an enthusiastic fan … I choose to follow you.  In good times and bad.  In lack and in plenty.  You are worthy!  You are holy!  You are mercy and grace!  You are love!  Your creation reflects who you are.  Thank you for allowing me to see, enjoy and capture the glorious splendor of your creation.

A-hunting they will go! [This or That Thursday]

It’s that time of year again.  The time of year when the boys don their camo, grab their hunting bows and set off into the woods, hoping to not come home empty handed.  Between an ailing back and a move to a new corporate office for the company he works for, Joel hasn’t been extremely available for hunting.  But he and Andrew have managed to get a few hunting excursions in so far this fall.  Unfortunately, they have come home empty handed each time, but I believe that sitting in a tree stand for several hours – father and son – is about so much more than the deer.

Last Sunday when Andrew was talking about going out to the stand, Joel asked Andrew if he wanted him to come along.  Andrew’s response was so precious … “Oh yeah, Dad!  I’d love for you to come with me!”

Whether they get a deer or not, I just love that they get to spend that special time together … just sitting near each other, whispering about things that really matter.

The above picture is my personal favorite.  Andrew had to borrow Joel’s overalls, but because they were too big, we had to use a clip to make them fit.  It reminds me that even though Andrew is growing up way too fast, in some ways he’s still just our little boy!

Family [Fall 2011]

Yesterday I shared a picture of my three sweeties.  Today I thought I’d share a few more from our mini session in the backyard.  My heart just bursts with love for these four people.  I am so super blessed to a part of this family.
